$1.2 million in Federal Grants Provided
to Boost Law Enforcement in California's
Native American Communities

September 9, 2003

Washington DC - Native American law enforcement agencies in California will receive $1.2 million in grants awarded by the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), under the Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP), Senator Feinstein announced today.

"This is good news," Senator Feinstein said. "The federal government must do everything it can to see that tribal police departments get the training, equipment and officers needed to bolster policing and homeland security."

The Tribal Resources Grant Program is designed to enhance the law enforcement infrastructures and community policing practices in Native American communities, and funds such items as salaries and benefits for new community policing officers, basic equipment, crime fighting technology systems, and training.

Since 1995, including today's grants, COPS has provided more than $328 million to Native-American law enforcement agencies to purchase equipment, receive training, and to hire 1822 officers.

"For years now, I have been a strong supporter of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, which has already funded more than 100,000 officers on the beat and many innovative projects, including Tribal Resources Grant Program," Senator Feinstein said.
