Statement by Senator Dianne Feinstein
on the Capture of Saddam Hussein

December 14, 2003

The capture of Saddam Hussein by U.S. troops is good news. It should have a major moral boost not only for our troops, but also for the Iraqi people.

As long as Saddam Hussein remained at large, there was a feeling held by many Iraqis that he could return to power and this gave a boost to the insurgents attacking our troops or killing innocent civilians under the guise of the Baathist party.

Let there be no doubt, Saddam Hussein is an evil man. Now that he is in custody, a war crimes trial can be held and he can be brought to justice. It is very important that this be carried in a factual and credible way for all the world to see.

Hopefully, we will also get answers to many of the open questions – such as whether there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or have they been destroyed or hidden?

The importance of this capture cannot be underestimated, but it also should not be exaggerated. There still remains a great deal of work to do and a long way to go."
