Senate Approves Feinstein Amendment to Swap Land Between Army
and the City of Seaside at the
Former Fort Ord Property
June 28, 2002

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Senate yesterday approved an amendment sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to the FY 2003 Defense Authorization Bill that outlines a land swap between the Army and the City of Seaside at the former Fort Ord, CA.

The amendment, endorsed by both parties involved, conveys a 105 acre property known as lower Hayes Housing, to the city of Seaside, in exchange for 102 acres known as Stilwell Kidney.

"This is a win-win for both the Army and the City of Seaside," Senator Feinstein said. "It allows the Army to use the new land to build affordable housing for military personnel, and it helps the economy of Seaside benefit financially from the developments. I believe this will help alleviate the problem of affordable housing shortages in the area."

It also marks one of first times the Army has participated in the Resident Communities Initiative (RCI), a program set up in 1996 which allows private companies to manage government properties.
