Statement of Senator
Dianne Feinstein on the Decision
of the ILWU and the
PMA to Agree to Federal Mediation
October 3, 2002
"I was pleased to hear that representatives
from both the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime
Association sat down today with a federal mediator in an attempt to resolve
the dispute that has led to the current lockout. At this time, mediation is
the right thing to do.
It is my understanding that this is the first time in history that the ILWU has agreed to use such a mediator. I believe this step indicates that the union is serious about settling the dispute.
Given the gravity of the situation,
this lockout must end and both sides must work to resolve this contract dispute
and see that California ports are moving full steam ahead."
