$8.6 Billion for Highway Trust Fund
- Means an additional $732 Million for California Highway Construction Projects -
July 25, 2002

Washington, DC -- The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee today restored $8.6 billion of funding for the Highway Trust Fund that was not included in the President's budget. This means an additional $732 million for highway construction projects in California.

"I am pleased that the Senate Appropriations Committee restored this funding," Senator Feinstein said. "It was estimated that in Los Angeles alone, these cuts would have resulted in a loss of $125 million of revenue and as many as 7,000 construction jobs throughout the region. With the funding restored, it will mean that these jobs won't have to be cut and that highway construction projects in the State won't have to be delayed or canceled."

In addition, the FY '03 Transportation Appropriations Bill contains millions for mass transit and highway construction projects in California.

"Traffic congestion is one of the most significant problems in the State," Senator Feinstein said. "By funding improvements to the State's highways and mass transit, the funding included in this bill will help ease traffic congestion throughout California."
