Senate Appropriations Committee Approves Bill To Provide Needed Funds
for Housing, Veterans and Economic Development

Washington, DC -- The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee today approved legislation to fund the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and related agencies for fiscal year 2003, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced.

"I am pleased the Appropriations Committee has funded a variety of important projects that will help improve economic development and the quality of life throughout California," Senator Feinstein said.

Senator Feinstein, a member of the Senate Appropriations committee, announced funding levels for the following California projects in the legislation:

HUD/Economic Development Initiative

  • East Palo Alto, CA - $750,000 to turn the Ravenswood Industrial Area into a commercial, housing and manufacturing center.
  • Inglewood, CA - $500,000 for improvements to the Inglewood Senior Center.
  • Fresno, CA - $500,000 to improve the Roeding Business Park.
  • Oakland, CA -- $250,000 for Covenant House.
  • Culver City, CA - $250,000 for renovations to the Culver City Theater.
  • Oakland, CA -- $250,000 for construction of the Martin Luther King Freedom Center, a center dedicated to teaching non-violence and environmental education.
  • $250,000 to help fund the Corporation for Supportive Housing, a non-profit which helps implement an effective intervention for chronically homeless people.

State and Tribal Assistance Grants

  • Compton, CA -- $750,000 to help replace city's water well.
  • Whittier, CA - $500,000 to improve city's sewer infrastructure.
  • Sacramento, CA -- $500,000 to improve and rehabilitate city's sewer infrastructure.
  • Eureka, CA -- $500,000 for the Martin Slough Interceptor, a new collection system for city's sewage.
  • Lake County, CA -- $500,000 for the Clear Lake Basin 2000 Project which goes toward restoring Clear Lake watershed.
  • $250,000 for the United Water Conservation District.

Environmental Programs and Management

  • Contra Costa, CA -- $800,000 for Bay Delta water quality study, Contra Costa Water District.
  • Glendale, CA -- $500,000 for Chromium 6 removal.
  • $500,000 for Diesel Emissions Reduction pilot program which would help the owners of heavy duty vehicles offset the cost of buying cleaner engines and fuels.
  • $500,000 for the Central California ozone study.

NASA

  • $750,000 for the Chabot Space and Science Center, a state-of-the-art center for teaching science and technology.
  • $750,000 for the California Science Center.
