Washington has a subway system, called Metro, which can take you to all of Washington's major tourist attractions, the Pentagon and even National Airport, for a very reasonable fare.

Metro opens at 5:30 am on weekdays, 8:00 am on weekends, and runs until 12 midnight. Trains arrive in each Metro station every five minutes during rush hour (weekdays, 6:00 am to 9:30 am and 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm), and every ten minutes the rest of the day. The base Metro fare is $1.10 for non-rush hour travel between downtown locations. Children 4 and under ride free.
