U.S. Senate Approves Feinstein Bill to Name Santa Ana Post Office in Honor of Pioneering Postal Worker Hector Godinez
June 23, 2000
Washington, DC The United States Senate today approved legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to name a Santa Ana, Calif. post office in memory of Hector G. Godinez, the first Mexican-American postal worker to achieve the rank of District Manager.
Mr. Godinez, who died last May, had a distinguished 48 year career in the Postal Service. He climbed the postal ranks, from mail carrier to Southern California District Manager. Prior to joining the postal service, Mr. Godinez served with distinction as a tank commander in the U.S. Army under General George Patton. He earned a Bronze Star for bravery under fire in World War II and a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle.
I am extremely pleased that the Senate has approved this important measure to remember and honor the life of Hector Godinez, Senator Feinstein said. Hector Godinez was a pioneer in the Postal Service and a pillar of the Santa Ana community.
Hector Godinez touched many lives. His life and death exemplify the ultimate sacrifice of public service, which we too often take for granted.
In the community, Mr. Godinez worked tirelessly for civic groups such as the Orange County District Boy Scouts of America, the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce and the Orange County YMCA. He also served as the National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens, one of the countys oldest Hispanic civil rights organizations in 1960-1961.
A companion measure was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.). The Post Office in Santa Ana is located at 3101 West Sunflower Avenue.
