U.S. Senate Approves Feinstein Bill to Name Chino Hills Post Office in Honor of Slain Postal Worker Joseph Ileto
April 4, 2000

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Senate late yesterday approved legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to name the Chino Hills, California, U.S. Post Office in honor of Joseph Ileto, a Filipino-American postal worker gunned down this past August in Granada Hills.

Mr. Ileto, whose residence was in Chino Hills, was shot and killed by Buford Furrow, Jr., a white supremacist, only hours after the assailant opened fire on the North Valley Jewish Community Center last August, wounding three young children, one teenager, and one elderly woman.

“I am extremely pleased that the Senate has approved this important measure to remember and honor the life of Joseph Ileto,” Senator Feinstein said. “Joseph Ileto was a man who touched many lives -- His life and death exemplify the ultimate sacrifice of public service, which we too often take for granted.”

“Joseph Ileto’s death also sadly confirms the urgency in which we as a nation must take a strong stand against hate crimes and racism. The number of hate crimes in the U.S. increased during the last five years, and the time is now to have a dialogue and pass meaningful legislation to address this issue. ”

The U.S. Post Office is located at 14071 Peyton Drive in Chino Hills.
