February 9, 2000

Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of a $2.7 million grant to a Sacramento area program to help promote greater educational success for the children of migrant farm workers.

The grant, awarded to La Cooperativa Campesina in Sacramento, is designed to help young people build the foundation for a better life as they follow their parents from one area to another with the changing harvest seasons. Outreach will be conducted through an existing statewide service network catering to migrant farm workers.

The following is Senator Feinstein’s statement:

“Today in California, many children of migrant farm workers do not get the necessary schooling and training to allow them to build a better life. This funding will help many of them gain the life skills necessary to achieve their dreams and assist them in breaking the cycle of poverty.”

“Some of the services available under the program will be: incentives to return to school and remain and succeed in school; specific job skills training; structured work experience and summer employment; language training and remedial instruction.

“The grant supports both in school and out of school activities and will also aid tutoring and study skills, community service, leadership development activities, including peer mentoring, supportive services, adult mentoring and comprehensive counseling and information and referral services.”
