National Parks Service Offers $4.25 Million to California Communities for Renewal of Urban Parks

August 10, 2001

Washington, D.C.- U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that the National Parks Service has offered $4.25 million in grants to California cities to provide funding for the renovation of urban parks and recreational facilities.

"The National Parks Service provides critical funding for the beautification and renewal of our community parks," Senator Feinstein said. "Many California parks, especially those in urban areas, have long been neglected and are in desperate need of renovation. This funding will go a long way toward helping restore these parks and creating a sense of pride in the surrounding communities."

In order for these communities to receive the grants, they must submit final applications to the National Parks Service within 120 days, proving that they meet Parks Service qualifications.

The Urban Park and Recreation Recovery Grants (UPARR) program was established in 1978 to provide matching grants and technical assistance to economically distressed urban communities. UPARR grants offer direct Federal assistance to cities for the rehabilitation of community parks, playgrounds, and other recreational facilities.

In order to be eligible for a grant, a community must meet guidelines established by the National Parks Service and demonstrate a strong commitment to rehabilitating local parks and recreational facilities.

Attached is a list of grants offered to California communities.
