Hart Senate Office Building
During the 19th Century, only a few senior Senators could command a small portion of the limited office space in the Capitol Building. Today there are three Senate Office Buildings. The first, completed in 1909, is named for Georgia Senator Richard Brevard Russell and is an example of Beaux Arts classicism. The second, named for Illinois Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen, was completed in 1958. The third building, named for Michigan Senator Philip Aloyisius Hart, was opened in 1982 and features an atrium with a dramatic mobile/stabile titled "Mountains and Clouds" designed by Alexander Calder. These buildings house the offices of all 100 Senator and the committees of the Senate. They are open to the public. Committee schedules are here.
