Department of the Treasury
The Treasury Building houses the office of the Secretary of the Treasury. Designed in Greek Revival style, this building is an example of construction technology and decoration of the 19th century. Visitors can see the innovative burglar-proof vault and the marble Cash Room designed to instill public confidence in the new federal currency. President Andrew Johnson used the Treasury Secretary's Reception Room for his Executive Office following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln; this room is also included on the tour. Another highlight is the office of Secretary Salmon P. Chase, featuring allegorical ceiling paintings and stenciled walls. Free public tours of the building are available Saturday mornings at 10:00 am, 10:20 am, 10:40 am and 11:00 am, with advance reservations only. The building is otherwise closed to the public. Each tour is guided and runs approximately 90 minutes. Reservations should be made by calling at least two weeks in advance to the tour office at (202) 622-0896. For security reasons, the name and birth date for each visitor must be provided when making the reservation. In addition, a photo identification is necessary in order to gain admittance to the building on the day of the scheduled tour. Visitors should enter through the Appointment Center doors located on 15th Street between F and G Streets, NW.
